Nick will share his personal story and how that story has shaped his development as a leader. Nick has spent time thinking deeply, researching and writing about ‘narrative leadership’. In fact, he ran a leadership development center in Banff, Canada for five years, helping leaders understand narrative practices and how a better understanding of their story could help them become better leaders. Nick’s leadership journey and his role in the community college movement is grounded in his “possibilitarian” spirit and his belief in servant leadership.
Dr. Nissley has served in roles spanning from k-12, community college and university settings, to the social profit and corporate workplaces (including mining and healthcare) –across the US and Canada. He has served in professor, dean, vice president, and executive director roles. Today, he serves as the eleventh President of Northwestern Michigan College. Nick volunteers as a member of the Board of Directors for Goodwill Northern Michigan, Traverse Connect, and the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship.
He has been married to his wife, Elise, for 24 years, and has two daughters, Isabel Francesca and Meredith Claire, who keep him grounded and grateful. Isabel recently graduated from Ohio University. Having majored in journalism, she has launched her career, working for Cincinnati Public Radio as a science and environment reporter. Nick’s younger daughter, Meredith, is a student at Northwestern Michigan College, majoring in Viticulture.
We all experience changes in our personal and professional lives and the rate of change is only increasing. As leaders, we are responsible for helping the teams or organizations we lead effectively respond to and navigate those changes while dealing with our own reactions at the same time. Yet, how many of us really understand the personal impact of these transitions on us and those around us? William Bridges has provided a roadmap to help the reader personally navigate and embrace what he identified as the three key stages of the transition process when we experience a significant change. Bridge’s ability to provide the reader a simple step-by-step guide through life’s transitions packed with powerful insights has created a classic that has endured for 40 years and is still considered one of the 50 all-time best books in personal development.
